Orion College offers the following curriculum:
The academic GETC (General Education and Training Certificate) band from Grade 1 to Grade 9. Parallel to this, there is Skills-based programme offered to those pupils who need to be on an IEP (Individualised Educational Plan).
Grade 1 to Grade 3 and Junior Skills Class
This phase is staffed with very experienced teachers where the learners’ needs are a priority. We offer Numeracy, Literacy and Life Skills in the academic programme.
Grades 4-6 and Intermediate Skills Class
The staff on this phase are experienced and dedicated teachers, who tailor teaching strategies with creativity as a team in order to recognise and mobilise untapped capabilities.
We provide group remedial sessions and supervised homework sessions on a daily basis. We offer extra lessons in English, Mathematics and Afrikaans First Additional Language.
Individual Educational Plans are drawn up for learners in the Intermediate Skills Class. The programme includes Numeracy, Literacy, Life Skills, Arts and Craft and Practical Skills. Practical skills include safety, hygiene, use of hand tools, planning and co-ordinating projects.
The Senior Phase consists of Grade 7- 9. We follow the GDE syllabus as laid out by the Government, with assistance. Each class in the senior Phase consists of a maximum of 16 learners, which ensures that each learner receives the individual attention that they need.
What makes our school so unique? We offer extra Afrikaans, English & Mathematics lessons for learners with severe language and numeracy problems.
The subjects taught in Senior Phase are: English (Home language), Afrikaans (First Additional language), Mathematics, Natural Science, Social Sciences, Life Orientation, Arts & Culture, Economic Management Science and Technology.
By the end of grade 9, learners who are eligible for mainstreaming will be identified and encouraged to enrol in the FET phase.
After completing Grade 9 learners will also have the choice to join the vocational phase to follow either Information Technology & Business or a Hospitality course.
FET PHASE (Further education and training)
The FET Phase consists of Grade 10 and Grade 11; Grade 12 will be implemented in 2015. The following subjects will be offered: English (HL), Afrikaans (FAL), Maths (Lit), Business Studies, CAT, LO and Consumer Studies.
What are Vocational Courses?
Vocational courses focus on obtaining practical skills and experiences along with theoretical knowledge to create a student who is skilled and ready for the working world in a competitive market place.
The South African Education and Training (SAQA) qualifications which can be obtained are: National Certificates (120 Credits); Diploma (240 Credits) and Technical Degrees (360 Credits).
Students must be found competent in all Core and Fundamental Unit Standards of any given qualification as well as some Electives to make up the credits needed for a specific qualification.
What are the benefits of the Vocational Courses?
Students acquire valuable practical skills.
The courses are set up in such a way that the students gain experience through the use of simulations and work experience.
Facilitators ensure that each student takes responsibility for their own learning pace and a Portfolio of Evidence.
Evidence is collected via Portfolio of Evidence (POE) and regular assessments. The assessments are designed specifically to establish the students’ competence and can be adjusted to accommodate each student.
Professional Body Accredited Courses:
ICB – Institute for certified bookkeepers Level 3 and 4
SAQA accredited courses: Level 3 End – User Computing
Level 4 Technical support
These qualifications are intended for learners who wish to be involved in the IT and other administration functions of any organisation or business in any sector, charitable organisations. The elective component allows learners to gain specialist knowledge, skills and insight in the area of computer and bookkeepers.
Hospitality – Food Preparation and Cooking City & Guilds Course
The City and Guilds course is designed to provide a broad introduction to essential practical skills for those undergoing training in these areas of work. The programme aims to reflect the international nature of the knowledge, skills and activities needed for the different countries or cultures.
The certificate provides a broad introduction to the theory and practical sides of food preparation, giving the necessary knowledge and practical experience to operate as a front line worker in a kitchen environment of a typical service outlet.
Pre Vocational Phase
For the learners not coping with remedial education and too high functioning for special needs education we offer a course in fundamental such as: Mathematical skills, Business English and Life Skills (Life Orientation) as well as practical work such as : Needle work (sewing for girls),Woodwork(boys), Mosaic work and other crafts.
